Wisdom teeth are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned. Often, however, problems develop that require their removal. When the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, they can become impacted (unable to come in or misaligned). Wisdom teeth may grow sideways, emerge only part way from the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

I suppose when humans first had them they ate raw, tough food and developed bigger jaws.
I was lucky, mine broke the skin and just showed their white tips, then they went down again never to resurface. My mum said it was because they could see their was no wisdom in my head.
I don't know what happened to them. I suppose they just got reabsorbed.

Back when cavemen ate mostly meat and poorly cooked food, they needed those teeth to chew to tough meat. Humans thesedays don't really need em anymore.
