Well right now Im an agostic meaning that I don't know and cant prove that God exists or doesn't. But being a neuroscience major (studying human consciousness and the brain) me and fellow students no longer believe in life after death as we are 90% sure, as is the faculty, that there is no life after death. So what use is believing in Jesus Christ? If consciousness is becoming more and more explainable then need for 'god' becomes less and less.

I was raised a Christian. My priest told us that we should believe in Jesus as our personal Savior. But what would Jesus save us from if there is no life after death as demonstrated by the field of neuroscience? What good is it then to believe in Jesus. Day after day and year after year its literally becoming fact that life after death is false.

All those near death experiences are just hoaxes. When the brain is in the process of dying it is asphyxiated (being choked) out of oxygen. Then a chemical (like the drug DMT) is flooded into the brain causing the person to "trip" - like going on a halluconigenic acid trip. Once thats done then thats it - no afterlife. Blackness. Whats the use of believing in Jesus?

If there's no afterlife, and your only concern is reward/punishment, then sure. Whatever. But if you're wrong, which I'd say is 100% likely and you at least concede is 10% possible, you owe it to yourself to take a look at God's claims. Hell has no exit.

Ok, there are a couple things wrong with your statement.
You are only pretty sure that there is no afterlife. If you are only pretty sure, then there's still a part of you that believes that there is, which means, if you are only pretty sure, and are wrong, and don't believe in Jesus and accept him as your Savior, then, (and I mean this only because it will happen) you will go to hell.
Being a Christian is actually really fun. You get to worship and incomprehensible God. And, even if there isn't an afterlife, then you would have had fun during your time here on Earth.
As for other religions, consider this statement, made by Jesus: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me." John 14:6. Notice how He uses the word 'the' instead if 'a'. That means that He is THE only way to get into heaven, like a key.
As for evolution, consider this: The single celled organisms 'supposedly' created at the beginning of the Earths' creation by 'The Big Bang', evolved and somehow become multi-cellular organisms. Now, there are apes, and humans, etc. But, In order to become these things, there must be a transition species, for example, from apes to humans, there must have been a human with hair all over his body. But, where is this species? The fact is, it never existed. More to consider: If two apes did their thing, and had a mutation at around 3 million years ago, eventually, all apes would have had a similar mutation and would have gone extinct. But they aren't. Lastly, humans can speak in a coherent language, and discover math theorems. How is this possible, when all apes say is some random "oo oo ah!"
As for the Big Bang theory, which is related to evolution: At first there was nothing. And then there was something.....
Something can't come from nothing, especially what 'makes everything up', and I can prove it.
Find a glass container with nothing in it, rinsed out throughly, dried off, and everything. This is going to be like a clean slate. Seal it, AIR TIGHT. No matter how long you wait, nothing is going to appear in the container (unless a rodent chews through your sealent). The same thing going for The Big Bang theory: Matter can't come from just an 'Air tight container'.
EDIT:
But can you prove that this "trip" actually occurs? Everybody who's brain was choked out of oxygen is DEAD and CANNOT tell you if there is no afterlife or not. It may seem like blackness because when you die, your body systems shut down, and the person cannot see anymore because their brain is dead, and they're dead. But their spirit and soul are not!
But you know, Faith is a funny thing. You believe in something because you just believe in it. You don't need proofs. So why don't you go your way, and I'll go mine... I'm trying to evangelize here, but you're such a tough nut to crack.

Well, lets turn pretty sure in to absolutey correct! There is no after life, and...THE BIBLE AGREES WITH YOU!

let's use only scripture to answer some questions.
What is the condition of the dead?
Eccl9:5 The living are conscious that they will die, but the dead are consciuos of nothing at all.

Psalms146:4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to the ground and in that day his thoughts will perish.

Is there some part of a man that lives on when the body dies?
Ezek. 18:4 Their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything done under the sun.

Isaiah 26:14 They are dead;they will not live.Impotent in death, they will not rise up.

Actually the Bible, although not a scientific book often agrees with the scientific order.

For instance the health rules about washing, eating and burying feces away from camp! Handeling disease and fungus, The way men should leave their wives in peace during the monthly flow of blood. Also, did you know the Bible said the earth hangs in the sky on nothing? Wjhile other religions were using elephants, turtles and strong demi-gods to hold up the world in space!

So resurrection? How did Jesus demonstrate what resurrection means for mankind. He resurrected many people while he was here on earth. That demonstrates, that Jesus, and God his father, have the memory of every molicule, atom, nutron, wish, desire of all humans in their vast memory! They CAN and WANT TO recreate us, and reunite us withour loved ones lost in death!
Next thought, God always was, is , and will always be. He is the creator of the universe, consider the perfect order to it all!
So, is it such a streach of the mind to believe, he remembers all the humans he created, and then sent his MOST BELOVED SON to die for! Really, Just like any parent, he remembers us completely, and can recreate that, because HE IS GOD!

If you were driving along, and a person pulled you over and said, "do not keep driving, the bridge is out...if you do, you'll surely die."

But you see other cars driving ahead, no damage, no reports on the radio. No sirens. So you continue.

Then two more pull you aside and tell you the same: the bridge is out. Then as you continue, dozens of people warn you with signs and yelling, etc. But there are no sirens, no smoke, no radio warnings, nothing to say that their testimony is correct.

Tell me, would their testimony hold water with you? After all, this is life and death here. Would you ignore them and proceed? I mean, after all: no sirens, no radio warnings and people are proceeding forward. Surely there would be some physical signs of this collapsed bridge.

Truth is, regardless of all the clamoring voices out there saying that their religion is right, there is one thing so many people testify of: other wordily experiences and God. The supernatural.

Start there. Do not trust these so called intellects who believe in nothing at all, only science. They are the biggest fools of all: made that way by God Himself. God is. So which God? Which God speaks of good and evil? Jesus is the one.

And if you dislike Christians...got news for you, God Himself dislikes most of them Himself. Don't go by Christianity. It's a mere shadow...if that...of what it was meant to be. Look to God in prayer...baby steps...and you'll begin to see things happen, perhaps very slowly, but it'll happen.

PS...To answer another's response: yes there is life after death. You quote the old testament. How about quoting the new !!! Jesus spake with Moses and Elijah. Not only that, people see and experience "dead" loved ones all the time, in many ways, including seeing them. Faith seems to be a rarity now a days?

Well, you should believe what you want to believe. Even if your 90% sure there is no life after death, there is still that 10% that there could be because it's not your brain that goes up to heaven, it's your soul. I'm not sure about what science thinks of people's souls...

But think of it this way, if there is no afterlife, than there is no chance for you to reflect on it when you die, but if there is an afterlife, a God, and you belive, than you will be saved.

Jesus wants to save us from the Hell that you really don't want to spend eternity in. I know that science is science blah blah blah, but if a bee is scientifically not supposed to be able to fly, think about the possibility that there in fact is an afterlife. Now you can choose which afterlife you want. Afterlife, or afterdeath. Jesus loves you. He loves all of us. There are too many complicated scientific things in this world to believe that they weren't created by God. Jesus is our Savior. He gave himself so we may live. I understand that for someone with such a strong belief to change their mind suddenly, but give it some more thought. Have a talk with a pastor, or church members, or anyone that believes in God. You will soon find out how happy they are knowing they've accepted Jesus and how joyful their lives are. Think back on your own childhood. Weren't you happy when you believed back then?

Dear Overtness: Modestly, I say to you, "Is it possible to believe in God and Eternal Life and be in the sciences at the same time? " Yes, I feel this is possible.

Many scientific peoples today combine their work with a very profound sense of God - as they work. They feel a humble-ness before the All Mighty in their realizations that - to date - their chosen area of Scientific Study has produced wonderous data about our physical world and the physical body, but they still cannot disprove God. Often science, like Physics, for example, will lead the physicist closer to God than further away! The String Theory speaks of elementary particles coupled with "forces." That's its basic definition.

An exploring mind with a sense of humbleness strikes a pose that allows for all future discoveries: Ones that suddenly lead toward God, and sometimes for periods of time, ones that lead another direction. The sciences fluctuate - proving and disproving ; sometimes, disproving what they had proven a decade or more earlier.

You have chosen a very interesting field of endeavor. It will afford you a life of constant stimulation and interest. You will always feel involved.

Conscious-ness is becoming more and more explainable in terms of physical matter. Chemical interactions. But, what God IS can't be tested, proven through mathematical equations, or touched. Can conscious-ness be something beyond the brain (physical matter?) It should be a consideration.

Find your studies exciting and mind opening. And at the very same time, consider the aspects of what your Creator is:

The Creator is immutable. It cannot be grasped by the physical senses (felt), touched or seen. It is a spirit-mind in a body of essence that fills all space and dimension. It is a Mind containing all Knowledge. It Creates in its own Likeness. Other spirit-minds. Nothing but conscious-ness exists throughout the Universe. The Creator has not a brain - nor any physical aspects. Yet - He thinks. Consciousness WITHOUTphysical matter firing off of chemicals and producing thought.

These aspects: an immutable Being - non-physical - that contains knowledge beyond man - that through Thought, Creates other Minds like Himself, that are manifestations of His Power of Thought. A consciousness, not physical, that never sleeps.

Consider bringing these aspects to your work, and entering them as variables to be dealt with - in the concrete results of dealing with physical matter.

The Father is Eternal. His Likenesses are the same. Something there is - beyond the physical. The brain goes dark, but not the small light still shining in the soul / spirit of His Children.

Rather than dis-connect from the Source of Life - stay connected, and as you go along in Life ask Jesus and the Holy Spirit to Guide you to the Truths that shall come from your work.

The best scientists stand humbly before their Maker and stay connected. I submit this for your consideration.

you make a fantastic point... and for that reason i tell you there IS no good in believing in Jesus (as the "son of God") Belief in God, however, is an entirely different story. If you have any concern for that 10% possibility, i recommend you keep your faith in God, but dont worry about Jesus/Christianity... after all, no one religion is more right than any other one

You chose to believe something based off of not having proof. That is where faith comes into play. I have faith in Jesus, as my Savior, because I have seen the many miracles that have been bestowed upon me and whether or not that leads to heaven in the afterlife- the things I have received here and now for believing in him would be worth it. But it is truly an opinion- I believe that believing in something bigger than yourself is always good.

and you were told this by someone who had died, and.... Oh wait! if that had happened, you'd know for sure there was life after death.. unless that person was lying to you.. oh dear dear me..

Each of us needs to accept Jesus Christ.. personally. You need to shush your mind and all the teachings, and just... be still.

We're have progressed so wonderfully as human beings, haven't we.. all this knowledge.. all the wonders of the universe at out fingertips.. we're never lied to by any one..

When there is nothing buy you, sitting on top a hill top, watching a storm come rolling in.. do you not see the hand of God..
There really are miracles happening all around us, daily.. if you only take the time to see them.

Stop turning away from God.. in your heart you know He is so very real..
And as for myself, I'd like to see you on the other side.. with all the other followers of Jesus Christ.

May our Lord hold you gently in the palm of His hand..and may you see His face, and believe.

Read the book of John, chapter 14. Jesus Himself talks about heaven and hell as a fact. Of course, as an agnostic, you may not choose to believe His words.

You may choose to pursue your course, but are you willing to gamble with your eternal soul that you are right and the God of the universe is wrong?
