Most of what has been said is key, but the best way to be involved in local government is to be informed. Most city council's have their agendas of the meetings online. I'd also suggest learning about how your local government operates (the annual city budget is a good example). That way, when you do start attending meetings, you already have a sense as to what is going on. Explore opportunities to serve on a local board or commission, and pay attention to the paid legal notices in your local paper. Local goverment is government that touches people at the basic level, and I think once you have become informed, then you can really become involved--and make an inpact on issues that affect your community.

Get involved with local charity organizations (future votes for you), attend council meetings, school board meetings, historical society, become known in your community as volunteer. Join the Chamber of Commerce, and make yourself known to local businesses (more future votes). Choose your issues well and you will have support in your campaign. Good luck.

Find a cause that interests you i.e. the environment, schools, local government etc & look for groups that support that cause. You can also look up the political party of your choice in your state or county. For example, you can Google "Acme County Democrats" or
"Your state Republicans"
Good luck to you and thanks for doing something to solve the problems.

Start by attending your town or city meetings, participate in the votes and minutes, From there you will be able to meet and greet your local "movers and shakers".
BUT most importantly, voice your honest opinion in the different matters at hand.
