I have the same problem: I go to My Computer and at the bottom scanners are listed. You can access it from there.
Make sure the scanner is turned on before opening My Computer.
It is a pain in the ash but it works.

Generally the scanner function is controlled by the software included on the CD that came with the printer.
Install the rest of the software.

mmm.. your scanner never will appear, like your printer, except, if you are using an image caption or OCR-text caption software!

in this you will select your scanner in the "file" menu, in the option "select source", here your scanner name will appear,
after this, you must select in the same "file" menu the "acquire" option and it will launch your scanner application and the scanning process will start.

else, you can use in the windows accessories the scanners and cameras assistant, here your scanner will appear.

good look
