There are many techniques for increasing the expressiveness of the walls and for making your home a place where you feel at ease. Many neutral tones are associated with natural materials, stone, earth, wood, straw, sand or with artificial materials such as metal, glass, and concrete.

Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing colors and wall covering fabrics to make your room appear bigger :

1. White and neutral tones are an ideal backdrop to make a work of art or tapestry stand out.

2. Neutral tones should be applied when a space is overloaded architecturally, or when we want something to fade into the background.

3. Neutral tones age well so they can be used where you do not redecorate, or touch up, very often; or if our intention is to specifically create an aged effect.

4. Variations on neutral tones are ideal for small rooms.

5. White and neutral tones are a great way of combining different decorative styles as they act as a neutral transition zone between one style and the other.

6. Gray metal or gray concrete, two neutral tones, are especially apt for creating modern ambience with a cutting edge feel.

7. Textured neutral tones, like limestone or temperate paint, are perfect for creating rustic effects.

8. Neutral tones fabrics, carpets, curtains, or tapestries are a great help when decorating because they go well with al the colors.

9. If you want a room steeped in neutral tones to be livelier, you can introduce a few dramatic color touches dark colors, even black, are a good solution.

10. A neutral tone is perfect for painting a wall or doors that you want to be inconspicuous.

On all of the decorating shows they have been saying that dark paint actually makes a room look larger. Also to use only 2 or 3 larger pieces of furniture to make the room less cluttered to seem large. Make each piece of furniture multifunctional. Their rooms always look great too.I could help more if I knew size, style furniture, female/male age, etc. Best wishes!

Pick a color that you like & accent the baseboards & moldings w/ white semi-gloss. The trick to making a room look bigger is to not have a lot of clutter. Stash stuff in bins & in your closet. Having sufficient light in a room will make it look more lively. Maybe throw a white comforter on your bed & add some bold color pillows. You can also try adding a mirror, it reflects light & will make the room look bigger.

HI, Paint the walls with a lite or if you like brite color....the trick is to paint the ceiling a darker shade of the same color. It gives the apperance of a much wider space.and a little more than you asked for ...the smaller the bed will help to enlarge your room also,if it is not a bedroom ...go with a small love seat sofa instead of the bulky full one. :)

Bright, bold colors.
It's "old news" to paint it a light color. That'll actually make it seem smaller in some ways.
Go for red or a red wall, a deep color, or something more bright and vibrant.
What also helps is if you want a lighter color, do a warm shade. That'll keep it alive. (cool shades cool you down and relax you). Then use white or neutral drapes for the windows.

Good luck!

Use a light colour on three walls, and paint the fourth wall a vivid colour you really like. You can use the vivid colour as a woodwork paint, or pick up the colour in curtains or pictures, or even in a wallpaper border.

Do one wall with mirrors. Place lamps in front of them. The mirrors will make the room look bigger and the lamps reflecting off the mirrors give a cool glow about it.
