"In the beginning weeks of the Atkins' Diet it's best to stay away from any alcoholic drinks. This is the induction phase. The basic process of fermentation is converting the natural sugars in grapes to alcohol. Ripe grapes are full of natural sugars.

After the beginning of your diet, during your ongoing weight loss, it is best to stick to lower alcohol wines. The Atkins site states, "Alcohol does not act as a carbohydrate so it will not interfere with burning fat in the same way that sugars and other carbohydrates do." A 3 1/2 ounce glass of wine contains about 4.3 grams of carbohydrate. Alcohol can also start a craving for sweets."
