does anyone have any experience with dvd repair kits? i have a dvd that only half of it works. could it just be scratches? i tried to rip the files and burn a backup but i ran into the same problem--only half of it worked (the same half as before).
i need to know if the dvd repair kits like the one in the link really work. and if scratches on a dvd would effect the ripping and burning of the files. would the scratch corrupt the data in the copy just like in the original?
thanks so much for any help. cb

Many DVDs with scratches can be repaired. It's worth a try. See http://www.smarthome.com/90021.HTML It's cheaper and my work just as well.

Scratches can cause a disk to not be read properly.

Scratches on the label side of a DVD or CD can remove some of the information. Hold a CD or DVD up to light and look through the bottom of the disk at the light. If you see any scratches where the light shines brightly through, some of the information layer on the label side has been removed. This is bad, the missing information cannot be recovered. Sometimes it's possible to tape a tiny piece of aluminum foil over the scratch on the label side and get a good rip / copy from the disc before throwing it out. The copy will have probably a barely noticable bit of video or audio missing. It will play fine because players won't lose their tracking on the copy. The disk will be written with the information missing, but properly formatted.

Scratches on the thick plastic bottom side of a disk can also cause reading errors. These are the repairable and much less serious scratches. They can be polished out. It is not even necessary to polish them until you can't see them. Just enough to make the scratched area nice and clear again.

Most of the expensive "repair kits" sold are simply plastic polish. Some come with a tool to help polish the disc more quickly. I use "Kit Scratch Out". Got it at Wal-Mart or K-Mart... forget which... $2.00 for a BIG bottle. It's for removing scratches from auto finishes, plexiglass, or plastic. Just apply and rub with a paper towel to polish the scratches out. I rinse the disc a little before final buffing. Rubbing with a completely dry paper towel can cause some little scratches.

DO NOT try to substitute rubbing compound or other automotive scratch removers that do not say they can be used on plastic!!! Most will BADLY scratch plastic!!!

I rather have used them and that they do paintings if the the scratches are no longer too deep. it extremely is nicely actual worth the money to purchase a burning application like Clone DVD and burn a replica of the video games and on no account use the unique. whilst the sport gets too scratched as much as apply, throw it away and burn yet another replica.
