I can remember when I was two and even how my thought processes worked then. For example, one day while in my crib for a nap I had my new favorite coloring book with me because I wanted to look at the picture on the cover. It was of a mother and baby and the background was blue. For some reason I had this uncontrolable urge to rip the cover just to hear the sound it would make. So I ripped it and then I regretted it.
Usually in a case such as yours, someone from child protective services will vidotape the child talking about the incident. Props such as dolls are often used and the child is asked to demonstrate with the dolls what happened.
Good luck.

Children are so smart when they are young. They are sponges to information. Children can remember things from before they can express themselves in words.. I have a three year old and he remembers EVERYTHING! He sometimes tells me about the time we moved into our new apt. He was only 1 1/2 when we moved. So it has been over a year, and he still remembers. He speaks as well as a five year old, and now is learning Spanish and can translate what he is learning into English. He is very smart and only three. So i am sure what the 4 year old is saying is in fact true, and whoever said that a child that young cannot remember much, has not been educated in child development or child psychology

"Investigations of childhood amnesia have almost exclusively focused on the earliest memories of adults. Here we investigate the earliest memories of children of 6–19 years old. Parents confirmed the memory events and dated the memories. There were surprisingly few developmental differences between the earliest memories of children. Although 6–9-year-olds recalled earlier events than did older children, there were no differences between older age groups. Memories from all age groups were similar in structure, social orientation, and the nature of the recalled event. However, memories of older children were more likely to involve negative affect. There were also few gender differences, although girls were more likely to recall traumatic or transitional events while boys were more likely to recall play events. Overall, results deepen the paradox of early memory: 6–9-year-olds have verbally accessible memories from very early childhood that then seem to disappear as they get older."
Go to that website and enter the search 'childhood amnesia in children and teenagers: their earliest memories.' That article will come up. What I copied above is all you can get for free; the article is about $40, I think. I checked several other websites and this seems to be the best. I typed in 'children's earliest memories' in Google search. Hope this helps. Good luck.

i have 6 children and i really do believe that children remember things as far back as when they started talking, which is usually around 18 months old, if the child was abused then i suggest you ask the guardian ad litem to refer the child to see a phsycologist for further proof, good look

usually memory begins around 3 or 4. do you remember much before that age? he should remember a little or at least have a vague memory of what happened. if he knows it all, have a child psychologist interview him and tape it... video would be best so that you can prove he's not being prompted or intimidated in any way. good luck.

i totally believe you when you say this child can remember. i am 36 and can remember things from when i was under two.......only a very few memories but for instance i remember specifically the day of my 2nd birthday......the cake my mom made which had pink icing, and what i did to that cake...........
also my son is almost 5 now and he remembers things from when he was a year and a half and 2
i would definately take him to a child psychologist that can record the child explaining things to him but first talk with the courts to ask EXACTLY WHAT THEY WOULD CONSIDER TO BE ADMISSABLE.
dont take no for an answer
and good luck

I wish I could prove this for you... but I know I have memories starting from just over 1 1/2 years old. Infact, i surprised my mother when I told her what I remembered. (first memory is in disneyworld) Was able to tell almost exactly what happened and who was holding me.
And my brother has memories from when he was around that age too. so it cannot be uncommon :/
