Go with something that interests you. People will recommend their favorites, but you may hate them and it will be torture. You'll also validate why you haven't been reading all these years. By the way, save some money and get a library card. You'll find more than you can read in a lifetime for free. Enjoy!

Improve your grey matter um, how about a bit of Tolstoy, maybe some Plato? Perhaps some poetry, recommend a bit of Byron. or Keats. A few of Shakespeares plays, MIdsummer Nights Dream is very readable. Edgar Allan Poe and a bit of Chekov to finish. If none of these appeal then perhaps you should read, A Brief History Of Time, everyone other pseudo intellectual appears to have!
The fact you are reading is good, anything you like will improve your grey matter, whether it be a sci fi novel or a trashy romance. Read whatever you enjoy, and keep doing it!!!!

Dave Peltzers trilogy- A child called it and so on..
The Time Travellers Wife- An excellent book.
Wuthering heights- Definately one of the best all time classics.
Prozac Nation.
The Regeneration Trilogy by Pat Barker.
The Bell Jar- Sylvia Plath.
Tess of The Durbervilles- Thomas Hardy.
Try reading some Shakespeare as well, well ahead of it's time, issues that are relevant even now and very clever written plays.

The best books I can recommend are the ones you can't put down. I like books by Koontz and King. But as regards improving your grey matter, the best books for that are puzzle books. The kind that really challenge you. Or language books, research shows that those who speak more than one language generally have a higher iq.

Of the classics I would recommend 1984 by Orwell. Inspired many, repeated by few.
Of the recent books, I would recommend anything by Max Barry, particularly Syrup and Company.

I used to sit on the loo and read the dictionary.
It depends on what sort of book you like to read, if you like mystery then Robert Godard is good I also like reading James Patterson.
Join the library that way you don't have to find somewhere to keep them.
Hope you find something good to read.

"The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" is a beautiful book which is deceptively easy to read but thought provoking and very worthwhile.
