My friend has a German Sheperd that was really good with both of her children as babies. She's now pregnant with her third.

Any dog you have will need close supervision and a lot of training. Smaller dogs tend to bite more, just a tip. Most of our small dogs we get in our shelter have bitten some person in their family and that is why they are given to us.

Good luck!

With a baby? Quite honestly, a stuffed one. Wait until the child is older to get a dog. Realize that larger breeds stay "puppies" until they are 2-5 years old (depending on the breed). Small dogs can be easily injured by a child (though not intentionally). Besides, a pup needs a lot of attention, training, and energy. Can you give all of that to the child AND a dog? Wait a while until you have the time for raising another "kid" (remember, having a dog is like having a 3 year old for 10+ years). Best of luck!

There is no best type of dog!

You choose a dog you like, research that breed and then put in the time and effort necessary to turn that dog into a stable, socialized, well-behaved member of the family. Any breed is capable of being raised with a baby, but in general, toy breeds (very small dogs) are not always tolerant of toddlers. They sometimes scare the dogs and they become nervous around the kids. But it's dependent on the individual dog and anyway, dogs and young kids should always be supervised.

I am also doing a lot of research on this subject I have a fourteen month old and am also looking for a dog. Everyone has an opioion and a favorite. You can take many quizzes on line (Iams.com,dogbreedinfo.com). Some breeds are known to not be as kid friendly as others. A lot of your smaller breeds can easily be hurt by toddler or small child by accident. I also have known some chihuhuas that are wonderful with children--and some that are not. A lot of your larger breeds are more forgiving or a toddler pulling or grabbing on them. The best thing you can do is do lots of research (just type in a breed or search for dogs good with kids). When you have a few in mind contact some breeders in your area and ask them more questions. Find friends or family with dogs and bring your child around them also. I grew up with a large assortment of dog breeds some that aren't usually good with kids. If you raise the dog and your child together you have a better chance of the dog getting along with your child. NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED WITH A DOG EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW THE DOG. Good luck with your search and do lots of research this is an important decision you shouldnt take lightly.

I had a Great Dane mix, Wolf mix, several mutts, labs, chihuahuas growing up. My mom also has a pitbull who I use to own (until I couldnt watch him because of pregnancy health complications, who now lives with her bc she is attached to him) he is excellent with my daughter climbing on him and taking food out of his mouth. All of the these dogs were trained and very socialized as puppies.

Some dogs that are usually great with kids: Labs, Golden Retievers, Boston Terriers, Beagles, Pugs, Newfoundlands and many others.

A black lab or golden retriever are best with kids of any age. Get the dog when it's young enough to be taught and grow up with the baby and they will form a special bond. Do NOT get a rat terrir or that kind of dog. They are NOT GOOD with kids. I have had three rats and neither of them liked kids. Do yourself a favor. Get a dog that will love and protect your baby as much as you do. Get a Lab or Retriever. You may want to do an online search for dogs and their temperments.

I would wait until your child is a little bit older...around age 3. This way the puppy and your child can grow up together but your 3 year old can at least understand how to be nice to the puppy this way the puppy will feel right around your child. If you decide on a puppy I would try a Lab or a mini Doxi.

a lab dog/puppy would be the best, Labs are very good with babies and children of all ages. When the baby grows up the lab will be its best friend and will protect him.

Labs are very gentle. Golden Retrievers are sweet also but they have alot of hair to deal with.. If you are busy with a baby there is not much free time to groom the dog.

A shephard/lab. It WILL be crazy and over active until it's 2 1/2 years old.
BUT
But it will calm down overnight AND it will defend the child and be sociable

you should research this on the internet. everyone here is going to swear that THEIR dog is the best, lol. :-)

you probably need to get a bigger dog since smaller dogs don't put up with kids tugging at them and getting in their face...but i don't know...they have some great websites out there that take you step-by-step on what kind of dog will meet your needs.

good luck :-)

loving mom of a terrier :-)
