Hi, Michelle,
When "new" symptoms appear, or old ones resurface or worsen, this is called an "exacerbation, attack, or relapse.".. An "exacerbation ", indicates either that there are new areas of myelin damage, or old areas have flared-up.... If symptoms are very mild, people experiencing an attack may decide to forgo treatment for flare-ups.... This will depend on how disabling the symptoms are and how much they affect activities of daily living...
>>>>>>>>
Since "symptoms", come and go naturally, many people with "MS", do not start treatment because they mistakenly believe that their MS is "in remission."... However, new lesions can appear and the disease can progress silently, that is, without obvious flare-ups...
>>>>>>
I hope, this helps!
I suggest, you go and see a doctor, it is for your own good, I tell you this!
I wish you : lots of luck, and courage!!!!

My regards!;)

but i do understand Exacerbation (I took care of a man who had a bad case of ms actully for a year or so) an Exacerbation means something happened to make it worse now dont take that fir anythign then what it is, if you had one ok dont freak out but do find out right away in what area exactly it effected you and your health

I agree with Kimberly 100%. It happens to me every once in a while. Basically relapse or exacerbation are the same thing.
If the symptoms arn't to bad you play the wait and see game or if your really concerned call you doctor. They can give you meds depending on the symptoms.
Good Luck Karen

I'm not sure that there is a difference. I think that maybe relapse is just the old word for it and now they call it a recurrence. One used to be in remission then relapsed if it came back. Nowadays they say no evidence of disease or similar and then if it comes back it is a recurrence. I amy be wrong but that's the way I see it.

A relapse means your MS is back out of control. Exacerbation means it is made worse by something else, or the MS is making something else worse. Can't tell without the rest of the wording. Either way, please ask your doctor, he or she can answer these. Be a good consumer of your own medical care.
