The son of Italian immigrants, Ettore "Ted" DeGrazia was born June 14, 1909, in Morenci, home of Phelps Dodge Mining Company’s copper mine in eastern Arizona. While his father worked in the mine, DeGrazia grew up with a passion for music and art. By the time he enrolled at the University of Arizona in Tucson, he was an accomplished musician and bandleader while earning graduate degrees in art and education.
