The mother dog will start to wean the puppies when they start getting thier teeth - between 5 to 6 wks.. They will start to get hungry, and want food. Just make sure that you have food down for them at all times - if you get puppy food, start off by soaking it in water first - that way it won't be so hard to chew. Eventually the mom will completely wean them. Just let nature take its course.

I started introducing soft or mushy food to our puppies around 4 weeks. It just seemed that these little Boston Terrier puppies got their teeth early, so Mom weaned them early. The older they get, introduce hard food to them. Not only will it help with the teething but it also helps with the bowel movements. I do not feed my puppies puppy food. It was suggested to me, by my vet. She indicated that the commercial puppy food is full of fat and in her opinion, causes puppies to grow faster than they should. You can use, for example, Science Diet Small Bites for puppies. But I feel that you can always take a lead from the mother. She will know when to let the pups stop nursing, but most of the time pups will be weaned around 6 to 7 weeks.

Puppies should be allowed to nurse until the mother weans them - usually around 6 weeks. However, when my females had large litters (like 9) I always helped them out by the time the puppies were 4 weeks by giving them puppy chow soaked in warm water. I also supplemented with goat's milk.

Id recommend getting PUPPY food, it has specific nutrients that puppys need to grow healthy and strong so it would be best if you go back to the store and do an exchange. My friend's new puppy recently died from a hernia. The veterinarian said that it was caused by the breeder feeding it adult dog food. I dont mean to scare you but i just want to make sure this doesnt happen to you and your puppy.

My aunts dog had 8 puppies and we strated slowly weaning them off at about 4 weeks.
1.Get the food your feeding your dog and blend it in the blender with warm water till its like mush.
2. Make sure food is cool.
You should slowly start making it chunkier untill you give them hard food. They have sensitive degestive systems. They should be completely weaned at about 7-8 weeks.

When my pups were old enough to walk I intruduced them to soft canned or soaked dog food made even soupier by adding milk or puppy replacer milk.

between 7 to 10 weeks!

And then... beware with the solid food you'll give to them!

When they are puppies... they can't eat everything!

But... You may ask to a Vet... it's FREE to ask and it's within a distance of a phone call!

Believe me... you won't watch a puppy die suffocated when you can't do anything!
