Animals for gifts is a bad idea. Even if the person DOES want a pet. different people bond with different animals. Someone picks one for you, you might not like it. If you are unsure if someone wants an animal, DONT get them one. That is partially why the animal shelters end up so full. If people don't want pets they aren't going to take care of them, and they arnt going to get them fixed, and vaccinated like they should.
The only reason you should give someone a pet as a gift is if it is discused before hand, and the animal is choosen together. Give them a "I owe you" card and a picture or something, then go find one together.

Never buy a pet as a gift or surprise-it backfires. It is a personal decision, a family decision. Spare the dog from being moved around. Go to the SPCA and play with the dogs on a regular basis. Pet sit for friends. It's just like having kids. It takes over your life, if you are lucky enough like me:)

Usually it's not a good idea. There are circumstances where it's ok, though...such as parents buying a pet for a child as a gift, but only if they really want it themselves also are are willing to care for it properly and provide a good loving home for it for the entire life of the pet. Other than that, it's probably not a good idea. Only give a pet as a gift if you are willing to take responsibility for the animal yourself, because you may be the one to end up caring for it.

No it is horrible. You buy a gift in the form of a cute puppy or kitten or whatever. The person feels obligated to keep it because it is cute and because someone they care about bought it for them. Before long they have grown attached to an animal that they didn't particularly want. Now they are stuck with it for about 15 years or so before it dies.

It is a selfish and irresponsible act to buy someone a pet as a gift, unless you have specifically recieved their permission. Even then they should have a hand in picking it out.

NO, not without their permission. Too many animals in the animal shelters now because of being unwanted. And please don't give pets around the holidays, even if your children want them. Give them a stuffed dog or cat wrapped up for a gift and then after all the holiday excitement go together and pick out the real thing. Animals require lots of love and attention. It is not fair to give them to people who don't want or can't appreciate them.

It is ok to buy someone a pet for a gift ONLY IF THEY HAVE SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT THEY WANT ONE. No surprises. Talk to the person to find out exactly what they want. Go shopping with them. But no surprises. Be sure that they are capable of adequately taking care of this pet.

Sure, I want a horse, but I have absolutely no place to keep one, nor do I know much about them. So, someone should NOT buy me a horse.

No it's not OK. First of all you don't know if the person wants a live pet. You don't know what they want for a pet and a pet is a living, breathing animal that should be purchased with a lot of thought behind the decision.

I think it's a grand gesture to buy someone a dog for a gift...first make sure they like dogs and if they are ready to take on the responsibility of owning a dog. This could be done by small hints in regular conversation. You can learn a lot by just talking.

Best thing I can say to this question is not unless you take the recipient shopping with you. Pets are cute and fun and lots of work and not for everyone. they can become a burden to those who recieve it. There are too many unwanted pets out there now. You really need to ask the person first. If they want one, great! go ahead! Otherwise not a good idea.
