There isn't a cure per se, but there are some treatments that can help relieve it for the long-term and allow you to live your life without being a slave to your intestines.

Diet and nutrition are first and foremost...
eat smaller meals at intervals, rather than 2 or 3 large meals a day
avoid wheat, rye, barley, chocolate, milk products, and alcohol, as well as drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or colas - basically, nothing fun or tasty ;)
reduce your salt, preservatives and fat intake
Try to increase your fiber intake; it has the opposite effect in IBS patients and can be very helpful
Grab a copy of Heather Van Vorous's book, "Eating for IBS: 175 Delicious, Nutritious, Low-Fat, Low-Residue Recipes to Stabilize the Touchiest Tummy " - it's really good. Her other good book is "The First Year: IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)--An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" - it's good for anyone diagnosed at anytime.

Also, try and reduce conflict, stress and emotional upsets. They can trigger a bout of IBS.

Lotronex can be a helpful med for those who have the primary symptom is diarrhea; Zelnorm can be helpful for those with constipation-dominant IBS.

Make sure you get enough sleep and try to get regular exercise, i.e., walking, Yoga, etc.

Check with the http://www.ibsgroup.org/ Group for help and support and more info.

Good luck!

Recent research has found that 10 to 60% of patients diagnosed with IBS actually have undiagnosed Celiac Disease.

Celiac Disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine. It is caused by an allergic reaction to certain proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens and gliadins.

Treatment consists of totally avoiding all sources of these proteins in your diet.

Be sure your doctor has tested you for CD (usually they do not!).

Best wishes and good luck.
