My sister is going into college, and I want to get her a "welcome to the dorm" present, but I'm not sure what she would want. She has all the essentials, but I want to get her something she'll really like. She's a typical 18-year old.

What about the "other" essentials like entertainment. Usually most college students doon't have a lot of money, so may not get to go out to movies often. You could always make up an entertainment basket filled with goodies like getting her tickets that are good for any movie at the local theatre, a gift card for movie rents, microwave popcorn (if she has a microwave) to go with the movies, maybe even a gift card to one of the local music stores so she can get a music CD or cassette.

if she's into music...some CD's is always good for when she has some down time. Maybe a funky looking lamp...or a really cool original looking bedside alarm clock. A phone card is a good idea if you are far away and she would like to call home periodically.

possibly something to decorate her room, some snacks ..
if all else fails, gift cards are awesome in college :-P Dorm food sucks, so its always good to have some money put aside to eat out...

Taxables. Things like toothpaste, deoderant, and other stuff. In addition to snaks and things. But get the good stuff, she'll buy the cheap stuff on her own.

Try a digital camera...or a mp3 player...or a laptop(if she doesnt have one) try aipteck.com ...they have a cool camrea with mp3playeadweb cam includer its called the MPVR!
