Have had my (male) Akita since 7 wks. of age, and he was trained to urinate and poop in a particular spot in the yard. Over the past week or two however, he has begun using various other areas of the yard, including spots where there are plants, etc. that I do not want ruined. Aside from this, he is house trained, going to obedience classes and is well socialized. He has generally not caused any problems until now.

He's growing up, and is marking his territory. You and your whole yard belong to him, as he sees it, so he's making sure everyone knows it.
You'll have to accompany him every time, and re-train him to do his business in the places it's ok for him to do so. It may take some time. Just keep reinforcing the training you began with, and he'll get back into the routine.

Remeber, dogs aren't full grown until they are 2-3 yrs old, and even then, they have some lapses from time to time. Just as with children, you just need to keep in training mode long enough, and then reinforce it as needed. Akitas are smart, terrific dogs. Good luck!

Same with my bunny. In a cage, he only urinated and did his business in one corner. In the yard, he does his big business all over the place. I think it's a territorial behavior. He wants all the lizards to know that the front yard is his.

Rember to neuter.

just take him out on a leash and tell him "no!" in a firn voice if he goes anywhere but the spott.... but dogs like to sniff around and leave their 'present' so other dogs will know that they have been there..

watch him when he goes out to do his business and if he starts to go where he isn't supposed to then say NO! and put him in the correct spot until he goes.when he goes in the correct spot then praise him.
