Disagree with you this time cat lady - people certainly *can* get tapeworms from a cat.
The cat could have gotten them from eating an infected animal (for example, mouse) outside. They can also get them from fleas. We had a tenant who left the place infested with fleas. These lovely creatures jumped all over me, then came home to infect my pedigree show cats & in turn their babies!!! We battled the flea problem, then I found one cat had tapeworm! UH-YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Disgusting!
The vet prescribed Droncit & the tapeworms were gone immediately. Of course we went nuts treating for fleas (the larger problem).
Haven't used Droncyl which sounds like a much broader spectrum drug. Not necessary in our case because we've never had worms in 15 years, other than that one cat after the flea war.

I have never heard of people getting tape worms from a CAT. Most parasites are "species specific" meaning that the second host is a human or another mammal.
The flea is the first host for the developing worm. Droncit is the treatment for that and I believe one pill is sufficient. Of course, if you don't treat your cat with the monthly topical to keep the fleas off it it can get reinfected all the time.
I don't believe in routine worming for cats. After all it is a poison you are putting through the cat's digestive system. Treat only when you find the evidence (little rice like things you can find in its bedding). The topical flea treatment is poisonous too for sure and the chances of the cat ingesting any quantity of it it are less than running it through the digestive system at full blast.

With a single dose Drontal controls every type of intestinal worm normally found in cats in the UK. Drontal Cat tablets contain praziquantel an effective and potent weapon against tapeworm.
Regular routine worming is important not only for the well being of your pet but also to protect ourselves and our children a s we are in close contact with our pets. Several worm species notably the roundworm, Toxopcara canis, and the tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus can be picked up by humans with potentially serious consequences. It is recommended that pets are wormed 3 to 4 times a year. It is difficult to prevent a cat becoming infected with worms but regular use of anthelmintics will ensure that the worms are killed before they can cause serious damage to the animal’s health.
When using Drontal there is no need to disrupt the feeding routine as the tablets can be given at any time. A Drontal Cat tablet will treat a cat up to 4kgs in weight.
Drontal Cat will control the following worm burdens:
Toxocara cati, toxascaris leonine, dipylidium, canium, taenia, taeniaeformis, Echinococcus, joyeuxiella pasqualei, ancylostoma braziliense & ancylostoma tubaeforme
Drontal provides outstanding worm control but like other pet wormers it has no prophylactic effect so it cannot prevent re-infection, this is why it is so important to a routinely worm every 3 months.
This is the best wormer in my opinion. Over the counter stuff can harm your pet. Always buy from a VET!!!

Hi Naomi...to answer your question simple is that humans can become infected with tapeworms, although infection is quite rare because it is established by ingesting the flea. I've included a website that explains in detail how or why this is and is not possible. This should help you answer your question more thoroughly as well and provide over the counter treatment ideas too. Droncit or Droncyl are excellent products that elminate the parasite best.

Humans can only get tapeworms if they :
1. accidently eat a flea
2. eat an infected rodent
Same way our cats get them. You cannot get teh tapes from the tiny segments you are seeing. Those are just eggs and must go through another host (flea or rodent) before becoming infective.
Hope this helps you relax some :)

Tape worms come from other sources than your cat. Cats get them from eating dirt and other stuff around in nature, Humans pick up tape worms from possibly beef or biting your nails after touching dity things

Very difficult for you to get them from your cat....the tapeworm egg lives on a flea. Get the cat treated properly at the vet and them get into a regular regimen of Advantage to control the fleas...no more tapes. Ask the vet. They'll explain.

I think you can get tapeworms too. The best way to avoid that is to get your cat treated. You can buy pills at the pet store. They are expensive but they work. You get 3 pills for around $18. They are called TRADEWINDS. Tapeworms are caused by your cat eating little critters or ingesting infected fleas so you will need to treat your cat for fleas too.
