The Phalanx CIWS (close in weapons system, pronounced Sea Wizz, also called R2-D2 because of the distinctive shape of the radar housing), is a fully automated weapons system utilizing the M61 Vulcan cannon, the same one used in the F-14, F-15, F-18 and F-16 fighters. This 6 barrelled, 20 mm rotary cannon can fire upwards of 6000 rounds per minute (100 rounds per second), and sounds something like a chainsaw.

This weapons system has fully integrated IFF (identification friend or foe) and is primarily designed to intercept air-to-surface missles that have made it through the task force's SAM screen.

One test showed the Phalanx's ability to track a target moving three times the speed of sound and succesfully intercepted it at nearly a mile distant from the Phalanx.

The Jarrett and Yuugiiri incidents described above both involved Block 0 systems, which are no longer used in the US Navy. The Block 1B systems now being produced are vastly more capable, and are still being improved upon.
