I think it offers us a very accurate view point of the world as it is, both physically and spiritually.

I mustve dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
Theyre moving into the street.

Now did you read the news today
They say the dangers gone away
But I can see the fires still alight
There burning into the night.

Theres too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands were given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.

Ooh superman where are you now
When everythings gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour.

This is the time
This is the place
So we look for the future
But theres not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion.

This is the world we live in
And these are the hands

I like Phil's take on things. First, he is not condemning outright, he is saying that this is a land of confusion. We have all these dreams of a better world but we are still in the midst of so many problems, so much grief.

We cast ourselves in the role of Superman, but that role seems like it no longer fits. We are losing control - as though we ever had it.

The biggest seller of this, to me, is his refrain:

"This is the world we live in
And these are the hands (we're given)"

He is laying it out: this is his vision and we still have the power to do something about it. But it is OUR responsibility to do something with those hands. Not with bombing but with love.

Going to put up some Peter Gabriel next? *smile*

Great song. Thanks for posting it.

It described the world correctly during Reaganomics and it describes it just as aptly now. Like the song says.. it is up to us to make the world better. No one else will. If we stay inactive and just hope it gets better we will wake up one day to find we've utterly destroyed it beyond repair.
