I use cornstarch on my birds to stop bleeding if I trim a nail to short . I get mine from the local health food store.

Like others have said, wrap them in a towel (preferably a hand towel as a bath towel will be to heavy). This is much easier to do with two people. Take their little toes and look closely at how the nail changes color as it gets closer to the foot. You don't want to cut lower than where the nail changes color. Once everyone is trimmed you can put concrete perches in their cages which will help keep the nails "filed".

don't use a nail trimmer for human nails, it will crush and crack the nails. Get a round or diamond shaped trimmer just for birds. Don't cut past where the nail changes color or your bird could bleed to death. If bleeding occurs have Quik-Stop on hand(buy at pet store) to stop the bleeding. Watch a bird that has bled out the nail afterward for an hour or so to make sure he doesn't start bleeding again. You will see blood spots on the perch if it does.

some puppy shops decrease nails for a small charge. yet, determine you come across somebody who rather knows what they are doing. An avian vet is a greater helpful decision, yet high priced. My parrots continuously act like i visit kill them once I trim their nails. .

just use regular nail scissors and be very careful. if you cut to much your bird might bleed to death (if it is a small breed). if you don't want to do it yourself, consult a vet.

Wrap him up in a towel, and hope he doesn't freak out.

EDIT: And for God's sake, don't take off too much. If you hit the quick, he'll eat your eyes.
