Ya it is considered day care center, with school type setting to get the child ready for real kindgergarten. Also the insurance won't cover just a daycare that doesn't have licensed instructors of some kind. The mom and pop type daycares are to loosey goosey and children were ending up dead. Not enough adults for the number of children needed adult supervision. Caring for our kids is very special and a very special person needs to take on that role. Leaving your kid with just anyone isn't cool at all. Only an accredited licensed facility should be caring for your little one, remember child abuse is at an all time high. Smaller kids can't tell you if they have been raped.

Let's see - teachers don't work for free, and preschool programs that aren't part of the public system aren't financed by tax dollars! Contact your public school system to see if there is a PPCD or Pre-K program available to you without cost. Education does come with fee or some sort.

A Pre-school is part "daycare" and part "kindergarten". It is daycare with an educational goal rather than just babysitting.

This is why they are so costly:
1) The teachers need to be paid. The teachers need to have college courses in order to be hired, and they still only get barely over minimum wages to teach the kids... and that takes money. You can't have a lot of kids per teacher, the ratio must be small, only 1 teacher per 10 kids or even less.
2) The school uses a lot of supplies that must be purchased (construction paper, glitter, crayons, paints, snacks, juices, etc.)
3) The school must be an inspected, licensed facility and that takes money
4) The better / bigger schools need to advertise, and that takes money
5) The better / bigger schools need to have a good amount of newer equipment to attract a lot of families, and that takes money

From working in schools, I've come to discover something. Pre-school programs are "cash-cows" to private school districts. They provide a similar service to daycare, so they charge accordingly. The thinking is "would you rather pay a daycare service or a school."

Preschools that are actually in a K-12 school don't charge if you're considered financially needy OR if your child qualifies for speech therapy.

Ditto what "Beautiful Woman" said. Fight your government to get early childhood paid for, or think about the complete service you are getting and how much it is really worth to you. To anyone else- maybe something you should have thought about BEFORE having babies. Prices of daycare/preschool are not highly gaurded secrets.

It ensentially a Day Care center. Preschool is not neccasary, and in some cases even hinders, a child's education. It's much better for the child if you can find someone you know to watch the kid, or find time to care for the kid yourself.
Grade school is a neccisity though, unless you want to homeschool the kid, but that's not encouraged.

They have to have money to pay the people to teach the kids and to have the supplies needed to do so. Also, many places provide 2 meals and 2 snacks a day. All that doesn't come free.

Preschool is NOT included in free public education. It's kind of like sending your kids to private pre-kindergarten.

Last year, I paid over $10K for preschool for my five year old and before and after school for my 8 year old. When they were both in daycare, it cost me $15K+ a year. This was a Y daycare...not a friggin private day care. Its ridiculous!!!!
