My nephew may have cerebral palsy. He is one year old and is just starting to sit up for a short period of time. He aspirates solid foods into his lungs, has a hard time focusing and has very little muscle tone. The doctors have not diagnosed it yet because he had no complications at birth, but are saying they will probably end up calling it cerebral palsy. I keep reading that life expectancy and quality of life depends on the severity. His parents are in complete denial about it and say that he will be fine. I would like to know whether he would be considered severe or mild.

Anything that will cause a person to choke or lose their breath should be considered more severe.

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to your question, mostly because of lack of information. Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term that includes a lot of different problems, and how severe depends on exactly what the child has. Best to do some reading and get some professional help from experts who understand. Also it is worth checking out the legal side, make sure you get what you deserve.
