There's really two different expressions about feet here.
Getting their feet wet means they are trying out something new. It comes from getting in the pool, when you're not sure if it's warm enough - you get your feet wet before you jump in full body.
Getting COLD feet means they are getting scared and may not do what they said they would. It's most commonly used when someone's wedding day is approaching and they start thinking about calling it off. Not sure where it came from (I'd have to go look that up and my dinner is ready, so I have to go).

I think what you are really trying to ask is getting COLD feet. This means that they are getting afraid to complete a task at hand - having second thoughts. This term is often asked of people who may have second thoughts before their wedding.
