I am 16 years old, my family currantly owns 3 vehicles. 2 cars and 1 truck that sits in the drive way. My dad has taught me how to drive the truck and I have become pretty good at it. The thing is, my mother is diehard agains't letting me drive it. She hasn't told me why or why not, at first it was that the truck was unreliable, but after driving it myself, it seems even more reliable then the car I use with my mom *until i get my license*. The truck itself is a 80-something chevy S-10 Durango that has had a good amount of work on it. My mom is also suggesting that i get a different car and pay fully for it myself. I find this defeating the point if i could drive the truck. How would you suggest going about to fix this issue? I really like the truck, but how would i convince my mom to let me drive it alone once I get my license?

*also wanted to add: I HAVE a job, and I already pay rent from my mother. She wants me to buy a new car, but i rather just cover the truck instead of a new car*

ALSO: the truck isn't big... it is a two seater with a small bed... you can compare it to a toyota corola, or a chevy corisica. It isn't a big truck, very easy to drive, dependable, and isn't a speed demon...

if i had to convince my parents that i should be able to drive the truck this is i would do it. i would try and show them that i am a good driver and that i am responsible driver as well. prove to them that you are trust worthy. it sucks but you kind of need to kiss their @$$. do a favor for them or be nice. if they need to go to the store for milk offer to go in their place and ask, can i take the truck (may or may not work). tell them how much you appreciate this truck. parents often don't want teenagers driving their vehicles that they have gotten for free because they are afraid they will abuse them because they didn't have to pay for it. Go and talk to them. i think parents like it when you talk to them like an adult ( so try to not use a lot of slang). tell them how you feel and act very mature even if they say no because then if you act mature even when they say "no" then it leaves room to try again. and when they say "no" make sure you don't say "uuughh" or something of that nature. give it a try or be creative and think of your own way, you know your parents best. think of whats on the line here this truck or buying your own vehicle.

maybe offering to pay a little money wouldn't either.

Just because the law says that you can get a drivers' license at 16, you are still a minor child. Your parents have the right and the responsibility to make sure that you attain the age of 18. Demonstrating responsibility in other areas may help you build a case for using the truck that you can plead with your parents. Being able to sit down with your parents and calmly assert the specific ways that you are showing that you can be trustworthy with the truck may just get your mother to relent and hand over the keys. Above all else, do not lose your temper or have a childish tantrum. When they hand over the keys, offer to run errands or pick up things at the store for your mother. Chances are, she is only seeing in her mind's eye your young body under a white sheet on the roadside. You have to sell her on the advantages of having a spare driver in the family and knowing where the vehicle you are driving came from and that it has been maintained properly.

Sounds like your mom is trying to keep you out of the truck because of the age. They must have got the truck new, or have spent a lot of money fixing it up. The big thing is if your parents don't want you to drive it, Don't drive it no matter what kind of answers you get. Get you a job and buy your on truck or car just like mom wants you to do. Good luck.

I am not sure why you think that you deserve to drive the truck as it doesn't belong to you, it belongs to your parents. Your parents have the right to decide who will drive the truck & who won't be driving the truck.

Driving is a privilege not a right. And that is why your mother is suggesting you buy your own car. You will appreciate anything that you work for more than something that is given to you.

Cars are expensive to maintain & operate. Get a job, buy a car & pay for your own insurance and gas. Sorry, I don't think kids (even my own) deserve a free ride. Learn to work for what you want. It will prove to be the most valuable lesson that you will ever learn.

Seb,
First of all I have to say that you should be able to drive the truck if it is reliable. However, maybe you mom is trying to make you responsible for your own vehicle by suggesting that you buy one and pay for it yourself. You see driving is a privilege not a requirement or responsibility of the parent. Offer to buy the truck from your parents at a fair price. Maybe that will solve the problem all around.

I think it depends on where you live. In Florida, I know the rules are as follows: A) You must have had your Learner's Permit for at least 1 year, unless you are coming up to the date of your 18th birthday. B) You must have over 50 hours of driving experience, 10 of which are at night. C) You can't start nigh driving with a Learner's Permit until having it for at least 3 months. D) You pass your Driving Test, which includes a car that passes inspection. E) You have a parent or guardian cosign because you are still a minor. I think that's all their is.

The only person who can answer that question is the owner of the truck, and it sounds like she said no.

FYI, Sounds like a big truck. You can do a whole lot more damage driving sloppy in a truck than in a car. I would know, I had some problems with my dad's half-ton pickup when I was your age.

offer to buy the truck.could it be the insurance would be higher on the truck if you made it your own.since you have a job ,can you pay for your own insurance.since you're only 16 maybe your mom feels like the truck has to much power for an inexperienced driver maybe thats why she wants you to purchase your own vehicle.my daughter bought her first car at16 went on to finish h.s. college and is now a dentist.she understood she was solely financially responsible for the car now she drives a BMW and never once did we have to help her out with her responsibilities.good luck

first, a license is a priveledge, not a right, and your parents are FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MISTAKES until you are 18. that means they have sole discretion as to whether or not you can even drive, or obtain a driver's license. secondly, she is trying to teach you the VALUE of hard work, and that is lost in her giving you for free what she wants you to work to obtain.

best way to get her to let you use the truck? try doing what she asks of you. could be her idea was to use the truck as your reward when she sees you make an effort of it. perhaps suggest to her that you are willing to buy the truck from her on payments. that might soften her up some.

Mom is probably concerned about your safety. She would probably prefer to see you in a newer car that has modern safety features like anti lock brakes and airbags but I understand that this may not be financially feasible for you at this time. You just have to convince mom that you will be a cautious driver. You may want to offer her one those driving contracts that states that you won't drink and drive or let others drive your vehicle. Maybe that would alleviate some of her concerns.
