Okay; let's just remember our basic dog psychology first.

If you give a dog a toy made from stuff around the house, he will quickly get confused about what he can and can't chew. Just for example, if you make a toy from, say, an old shoe, then your dog cannot distinguish between the chew shoe and every other shoe in the house. He may start to chew all shoes and would then be justifiably confused when you punish him for chewing shoes.

This is why it is a great idea to buy specific dog toys which are not made from stuff you find around the house. The best I have found is a Kong. They are almost indestructible and every dog loves a Kong.

For all these people who give their dogs socks, remember that long strands of thread can easily cause intestinal blockage which is fatal. Not such a good idea, really. Giving a dog shoelaces or rubber bands to chew is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It's very dangerous, and why do it? Spend twenty bucks and get a real toy.

If you have children that are grown, give the dog some of their unused baby toys that lack sentimental value. It's the same thing you'll find at the store! Also, really strong rope is a great chew toy.

tie shoelaces around his/her favorite treat such as a bone, carrot, etc... Make sure to cut off the plastic parts and tie knots at the ends. Also this works only for smaller dogs because big dogs may try to eat the shoelace as well. My dog loves this kinda toy but I never take my eye off her when she is playing with it.

My dog's favorite favorite toy is two tennis balls in an old sock with the end tied off. No idea why, but she loves to grab it by the end and swing it, play tug of war...she's crazy but it was cheap and easy! She also likes to chew on empty water bottles but we take them away if she starts pulling pieces off.

My dog loves playing tug of war with a old pair of socks, also empty plastic coke bottles, I put dog food in it to rattle and they will chase and slap at it for hours, I use the dog food just in case it gets out so it safe to eat. I do not leave them unattended with these bottles to prevent injuries. Flash light with the light son the floor they like to chase.

You can stuff unmated socks with other unmated socks and tie the end in a knot. My little doggie likes to chew on anything plastic, whether or not we've deemed it a toy! Hope this helps.

I make toys from old t-shirts & towels. Cut into strips, braid together, tie knots & give to dog. My dogs love them!

Do you have any rope?
Just a little will do, this makes a great tug-a-war toy for your dog...and you. Do you have balls that he can play with? He'll play with them too...I'll try to think of more.

empty two liter bottles are my dogs favorite (make sure to take off both of the top plastic parts so they don't choke on it).

If you give them any of your household items that you use, such as a shoe, you will train him to go for all of your shoes, including the ones you don't want him to destroy. Choose carefully

You can use all those mismatched socks and tie them together to make a tug toy.
