Zombies are fictionalized. Many years ago, I saw a TV news magazine report. In Haiti, as a part of some Voo Doo ritual, people were buried alive as punishment and were released before they suffocated completely. Many ended up with severe brain damage and moved almost like zombies seen in movies.
