A group of symptoms that occur when food or liquid enters the small intestine too rapidly. These symptoms include cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness. Dumping syndrome sometimes occurs in people who have had a portion of their stomach removed.

Dumping syndrom is a syndrome of hypostension/lightheadedness after meals, particularly meals high in starch.

The cause of dumping syndrome is that starch is broken down in the GIT into smaller sugar molecules.

One starch molecule has the same osmotic effect as one sugar molecule.

However one starch molecule is broken down into MANY MANY sugar molecules which multiplies the osmotic effect by 10-100 fold (depending on how long the starch is, really) ...

This draws fluid into the GIT by osmosis

(taking fluid out of the CVS - less fluid in your blood vessels)

and so the blood pressure drops

and so the patient feels light headed and eventually faints

-----------------------------

The reason why this does not happen to all of us is that our stomach empties as a nice slow rate. We get to handle the osmotic load bit by bit.

In people who "dump" a load of undigested food from the stomach into the small intestine, this phenomenon is more marked.

This tends to occur in people who have had stomach surgery of one sort or another.

My dad had that, or so he claimed. I guess it's where the food you eat moves through your digestive tract too fast, thereby robbing your body of the nutrients it needs.
