His tail curls over his back, head is thinner and coat is smoother. Not sure which step to take next. We love him, but I'm afraid I've been misled.

Since this is a registered dog - you should first contact the breeder and let them see the dog. What do they say? Look at the parents. Tell them you need to see both parents. Does the puppy resemble them?

If you don't get any satisfaction from the breeders, contact AKC and they will investigate (at least if they're like CKC they will).

Well, you probably got it from a backyard breeder. Just because it is AKC registered, does NOT mean it is what the STANDARD calls for. There are many Newfies that look more like a lab mix or a flat-coat than a Newfie. It is sad, but true. If the pedigree has no Champions, or none in the first three generations, then probably there weren't many shown, and there may be a reason for that.
At 7 months, they can really go through the puppy uglies. Some very good Newfies were totally ugly at this age. The tail however is a major fault. It should not curl at all. This does sometimes crop up in breedings. That would make the puppy be sold as a pet. It could not be shown with a tail like that. Depending on his "line" he may be one of the slower to mature dogs. They can come out with a decent head at 4-6 years. Many Newfies are not fully mature until then.
If you got the dog from a good breeder...meaning the parents were cleared of hip,elbow,heart,cystinuria....and the puppies saw a cardiologist BEFORE going to the new homes.....you are probably OK. If these things were NOT done, you didn't go to a good breeder.

Feel free to e-mail me if I can help you figure out anything in the dogs "line" or refer you to anyone who can help to tell you anything about the place you got him!!!

Do not ever concern yourself with the AKC!!! They do not imply that you are going to get a show quality puppy at all. Just because you may have gotten a poor quality one, they can do nothing about it. If you got the AKC papers, that is it. Unless you could prove that the dog is from a mixed breeding, which you can't.

Even if you get papers, some dogs can look like a throw back of a breed that was helped to make the Newfie. Or you could have gotten a mixed breed puppy. That is why you should check out the person you buy from and never buy from a pet shop!

If you love him, stop being concerned that he doesn't look like a show quality newfie. You love him, he loves you. End of story there.

However, you owe the breeder a call. If he is a quality breeder he will want to be aware that his pup turned out that way. He may offer you a settlement. He may not, after all he is in business. But he will certainly want to rethink breeding that pair.

If you present the problem tactfully in a non accusatory way, and he doesn't care what your pup looks like, you can figure him for a puppy mill or backyard breeder. In that case, it was your fault for not checking out the person you dropped a pile of money on. Love your dog and move on.

In any case, neuter him now. He should never be bred.

Unless you have a written contract staing in detail your guarentee then your SOL.

This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to take the time and research first the breed your intrested then the breeders. there are very few responsible breeders around. Irrespinsible ones are just waiting for the unknowing consumer to get their pups.

Make this a live and learn lesson. Alter your pup, love him as the pet he is. And learn about how to spot a responsible breeder.

Search for pix of puppy newfies on the net and compare how they look to how your pups looks. Sometimes a pup will look different from a grown dog. It could also be a purebred but not up to the breed standard.
