If he is your ex then you need to detach move on and get over him. That will allow you to find someone more suitable. Some years down the line perhaps you can meet up (not in secret) and if you can laugh and look fondly back on the good times then maybe a friendship of sorts can be mantained. This should be acceptable to both your new partners. Right now you are still hurting and can fall prey to an intimacy or emotional entanglement that is not healthy

It's difficult to be just friends with your ex when you still love him.If you think that you will not be able to take it when you get to know of his activities, get real!!...you will anyways...hook or crook!so continue being friends...but don't be there for him at every call.remember that in life you come across many such tests. i say tests because it all depends on whether you choose to be stuck in a time warp and later realise how the world has moved on while you havent or either you choose to grow from this lesson to make you stronger to face other bigger hurdles.Prepare yourself to face the worst, cry if you want to,think of the more important people who have meant so much to you over the years.friends..family etc...well ofcourse except your ex and then swallow the hurt and finally digest it.When you face it in reality, you will not be as hurt as you expected you would be.Keep yourself busy after that. remmeber there is no point cutting off somebody from your world so continue being friends and even if he moves on, in no time you will be so used to the fact that you'll only be happy to have learnt that you are now a free bird!so goodluck!

I think its not easy to forget your ex. but you ultimately call is OVER coz you mutually decide that there is no solution to the current problems. Being with him as a friend would take you no where but in to the same situations again n again. When you call it OVER you actually need to stay away. Two souls whenever they interact either get close to each other or far from each other. You dont want to come closer and thats why are calling it OVER so why to stay in touch? My personal opinion is forget it and move on. Rest is life...
