My mom woke up a few days ago with a water blister on her leg. It was small, and she had to leave in a hurry so she didn't pop it. Instead she put a band aid over it and left. The next day she woke up and it had poped itself, but it was the size of a penny. Now Today it is the size of a quarter. Why is it 'growing' and how can we make it stop?

It's very possible that your mother may have some impaired circulation in the legs which is probably why she developed a blister in the first place. The fluid is trying to escape somewhere and seeps out the outer tissues. If it got bigger after it was popped, it's probably because she isn't getting enough red blood cells to the legs. Maybe she has swelling in her legs. Tell your mom to put her legs up on a chair and make sure her feet are higher than her knees. This will help get rid of some of that swelling or fluid she has trapped in the legs and might get more blood supply there which will heal that blister faster. You need to keep it clean and make sure if she has any swelling in her legs to put her legs up. Once you get the swelling down, she will get more blood supply. If she has poor circulation from something else, then....she may need something else, like unclogging her veins in the legs...etc.

There may be a slight infection there.Keep the area clean and dry. Cleanse gently with soap and water. Pat dry with towel.
Soak blister in warm water for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day.
If the blister is intact (not broken), keep it covered with a clean, dry, sterile dressing (band aid). (Do Not Open Blisters!)
If the blister has broken, apply Bacitracin Ointment and cover with a clean, dry, sterile dressing.
If you notice increased drainage, swelling, redness, or pain, go to your health provider immediately.

Is your Mom diabetic by chance? Mine is and she gets water ulcers like that, it definitely needs medical attention!!! They will give her a cream to put on the "blisters to help them to heal. My mom had roughly around 20 - 30 of those on both her legs and let me tell you it took nearly 3 months this time to start healing. Tell her to wash and pat dry several times a day along with using the topical cream by your Doctor.

It may have a fungus or bacteria in it. Try some neosporin, antibiotic cream on it and hopefully it will stop growing.
