I am in the process of enlisting in the reserves. I went to MEPS last week and had the recruiter call and say that they found I had high cholesterol (I am 40) They sent the file to surgeon general in fort knoxx to apply for a wavier. Does anyone know about these waviers and how likely I am to get on for high cholesterol?

Waivers have come into the spotlight recently because of the liberal use of them in the recent past. The mentally challeged man getting in (mental age 8), the paranoid schizophrenic committing suicide, etc. The fact that they didn't immediately disallow you is a positive sign and is more procedural than exploratory. They will either ask you try to bring your cholsterol down by diet change or medication before deciding (recheck in x amount of months), avoid the risk and deny the waiver, or rubber stamp it and send you on your way.

I'm in the reserves and one of my troops has the same issue. He was accepted in at MEPS and went through training, but not even 3 months later their sending him through a medical review board to process him out for high cholesterol. Did you enlist already? Are you prior service? I'd suggest getting out now if you can instead of having to deal with it later. If you are non-deployable, you are not an asset. That's how they look at it.

Waivers aren't really that big of a deal, I needed one when I enlisted in '89. Considering the need for enlistees nowadays, you should have a pretty good shot depending on how high your cholesterol is.

There are a couple of blogs from people who got waivers for high cholesterol. I guess it would depend on high it is & what you bring to Reserves. Good luck!

Waivers take time and you might have to go to the doctor to get cleared as well!

Do you perhaps mean "waiver"?
As for the rest of the question, I do not know.
