Why do Jewish people seem sad when I tell them I'm not Jewish?

It's weird when I'm in Italy I always get mistaken for Italian. Last summer I travelled in Ireland & they thought I was Irish (I do have freckles :) )) .

I just moved to NYC and I get asked a lot if I am Jewish (by Jewish people). No one has ever asked me that before, also, why are they disappointed/

It's a pretty common thing. When I was in Japan I often got asked if I was half Japanese.. never mind the green eyes.

Take it as a compliment. They want you to be one of them so they can boast about this nice Irish/Italian/Jewish girl they met, who seemed so sweet and pretty, and isn't she a credit to our people?

Just look at all the attrocities committed against Jews by Gentiles! Holocaust, Crusades (many Jewish communities were destroyed on the way to the Holy Land), and the such. Also, maybe they're hoping they can meet some new Jewish people whom they can relate to, such as hanging out, going to synagogue together, that sort of stuff. Don't you find it much easier to converse with people whom you have things in common than people whom you have nothing in common? I'm sure it's no different for Jews.

Well, for the longest time as best as I could tell my family were the only Mexicans in my town. Then one family would move in, and then another. Everytime we'd come across one in a public setting like a store they would just wind up talking to us and it was because they hadn't had a chance to talk Spanish in a long time and felt somewhat alone among the more-or-less all white/black city we were in. Maybe the Jews you are coming across are feeling alone like those Spanish families were. When it turned out you weren't jewish, they felt alone again because they couldn't speak Hebrew or discuss things that maybe their Christian neighbors didn't always understand.

May be ya look like Jewish, but any ways May be they want ya to become Jew because they think they are right and all other are wrong and they are gonna go to heaven and all others to Hell this might be the reason.

Wow, so a lot of people that answered this don't like Jewish people. I'm not Jewish, and i do have my anti-Semitic moments but good gawd people, they're just Jews.

It reassures local people and narrow thinking communities to feel you are part of them...Not an enemy.
But be happy everyone thinks you are "of them".
Those who are disappointed, need help.
