omg help!! my first grader just came home from his 2nd day of school and is telling me that he has spelling tests. I have no idea of how to help him study. The only help I got growing up was being told how stupid I was when I did poorly. Any games or anything that I can play to make it easy for him would be soooo greatly appritiated. Thank you in advance guys.

Middle school teacher here...

I hate to say it, but the thing that works best in my opinion is repetition, especially in the same mode as the test. If it's an oral quiz, like a spelling bee, having him repeat it over and over aloud. More likely, it's written, so having him copy it many times really does help. Oh--and not the trick some kids (myself included) like to do of first writing all of the first letters, then all of the second letters... Their brain, as it were, needs to gets used to seeing and spelling it that way.

Of course, this is booooooring to say the least, so turn it into a game or reward. Example--have him write it down 10 times on ten slips of paper, and you add a few misspelled ones to it. You then hide them around the home, and when he finds them all, he gets a reward. No reward if he chooses a misspelled version as one of the ten.

In any case, there is ultimately no substitute for repetitive practice here.

Just use his spelling words list and call out each word, one at a time, and have your son write each one down on a piece of paper without looking at the list. Let him review the ones he got wrong and test him again. Repeat this process until he can spell them all. This will simulate the testing situation, and this will boost his confidence for when he takes the tests at school.

don't panic! they usual have 2 test a week (here that is) the first test if they miss too many they can retake it the next day. you will be very surprised in how well they can do. in class they will work on the words all week before the test. your little person will do fine and so will you, just think of the big things they will be doing in high school. that is when you want to panic.

First, I suggest that you address your question to your son's teacher. Second, try spelling games that will help him with the sounds. Third, go to your public library and ask for help. Finally, try a query on Yahoo Search for spelling improvement or such. Good luck.

Give him spelling list. First read it to him. Then tell him to right down, then say him read it 10 time out loud. Perfect ! My son usually brings words list from school and doing this process. Says practise makes man perfect so tell him read it again and again .

well all you do is tell him to study you write the words on a paper make sure there is none of the answers any where he can see it and get him a paper and tell him the words then he writes it and then you correct it then if he has anything wrong keep testing him and make sure he gets it correct...
