I've actually know a girl who recently did this. It's never happened to me personally, but there's always a first time for everything.
My view is that, since it's a first date, we probably aren't ranked very high in priority, when it comes to a girls time. If friends or other things come up, or she just doesn't feel like going out, then they'll cancel.
Don't take it personally, it's not like they're out to hurt you. Besides, how can you be hurt, there's no emotional investment, but I do understand the disapointment. Just go with the flow, sometimes girls do end up calling back to set up another time (good way to guage interest).
If they don't call back...next!

All of the answers above.
Bottom line: She's not interested in you to the point where you're first on her list. To avoid this in the future, don't make yourself so available. Some women like uncertainty, they like to wonder whether a guy really is interested in them. If you show your cards way too early, she'll think that you're too easy and lose interest, if any was present in the first place.
If a girl really is into you, she will keep her plans to meet with you, since she's excited about getting to know you. So in the future, don't make yourself too available (don't call and talk to her for too long - just call once to set up a date, and again the day before or on the day of to re-confirm. I think email is a better way to correspond.) Also, work on developing different approaches to women and see how they react.
More mature women don't flake out on you, since it's just plain rude.
EDIT: LOL. Nimbleminx has a great strategy.

i agree with 463
but check this, i recently plan something with this girl
but 2 things happen i was tired and i didnt want to drive all the way to her house
now there was another chick who call me last minute who lives as far as the first one and i went out there to see her
the difference i want one more than the other
but like 463 mention
its a first date, we are not a priority, sometime they get nervous and decide not to go out
what u do, keep it cool dont sweat it and be patient
continue to talk to her spark up nice convo then ask her out again and if she says "no" forget her she s not interested in u
happen to me i asked a girl out she said yes and cancel
5 days later she pick me up from work and took me out

That's just plain RUDE! They're probably silly twits who ditch you because their friends make some tacky comment about you. It probably has absolutely nothing to do with you at all, but rather the fact that they don't have a date themselves and are just being petty, meddling, _ _ _ _ _ _ _! If they're that easily swayed and have such poor taste in friends, you don't want to date them anyway. However, I think you should point out that they're being rude, but in a subtle fashion... "You can't make it? I really wish you'd let me know sooner. I'd made reservations at ___(insert name of expensive restaurant here)___. Oh, well. I guess I'll call _________. She loves __________." That way you let them know that they're being rude, they're missing out on a great date and that you won't be sitting at home just because they flaked out on you. Good luck.

Cuz they're not into you. Women that like you never break dates, especially at the last minute. If she says not tonight, but tomorrow, that's okay. Otherwise, thank them for not allowing you to waste your time and money on them. Find someone new.

A lot of girls have a hard time saying no. So they tell you yes, so they have a week to figure out how to tell you no, instead of having to do it on the spot. Start aiming your sights on slightly more desperate chicks.
