As Patricia S said, feline gestation is about 8 weeks, and the best way to know they are about to give birth is to be aware that the commonest nesting urge in felines is to find someplace sheltered and--usually--inconvenient for their staff--in which to do the deed.
If this is her first litter, she may pace a lot, or lick herself, or even cry--they find it as startling the first time as humans.
Caution, though it is wise to keep an eye on her, do not try to relocate her nest, she'll just make another. And wait several days before you do try to move the litter to a more convenient spot. Parturitional felines are extremely protective, and seem a little paranoid to humans.

Cats gestate for 8 weeks. There is no way to tell when they are ready to give birth. The will usually begin seeking out a sheltered place in the last week or so, in which they can give birth safely.

Well the immediate sign that a cat is ready to give birth is when they start having "contractions." I don't know if that's what they really are, but that's what i labelled them. They usually find a spot they are comfortable in, sit up and start making swift pushing movements. For my cat, it just happened to be my lap. She sat there, sat up and I thought she had hiccups, but NO! She was getting ready to give birth. She didn't actually have them in my lap, we moved her just in time, but that's how i know.
