Well, they do work, but if your dog is infested with fleas, he should get some sort of flea bath. If your neighbor doesn't mind, maybe you could suggest giving him a bath for them. It would probably be appreciated and they might pay closer attention to their pet if they know you are too. Good luck! Oh yeah if the dog has a dog house, that should be cleaned out and sprayed down with some kind of flea killer. Use something from your local petstore, and ask what be appropriate for the yard and doghouse.

Unfortunately, most fleas have become immune to flea collars. Have them use a Capstar pill first. You can get this from any vet. It does not have any lasting protection but knocks off any fleas that are on. They use this at most shelters when a dog comes in that has them. Next, bathe the dog in flea shampoo and let him stand with the lather on him for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. This will get any remaining off as well as eggs. When rinsing, make sure to rinse until the water runs clear. You will get eggs, flea dirt and blood. Afterwards comb through with a flea comb to make sure nothing is missed. Keep the dog away from the flea area for a few days while the yard is treated. You cannot use Advantage, Frontline, etc within 24-36 hours of a bath so that is another reason to keep him put up (in a house, garage, basement, etc). Then apply the flea protection as soon as instructions say to.
Other things to do - give brewers yeast in the food to help with the itching. Think of how a flea bite itches you. He will itch for days. Another thing is Benedryl. Hydrocortizone cream or spray will help to ease the itching while the bites heal.
This has been a bad year for fleas and for ticks. The sooner the dog gets treated, the less likely he will get sick from them - or the people around him do. He is also more likely to be able to interact with his family if they are not uncomfortable around him and he will be happier as well.
Good luck

If the dog is suffering sores from the fleas it needs to be seen by a vet because the sores may need to be treated with anitbiotics. A call to the ASPCA may be necessary to get the dog treated & to be assured the dog will be cared for on a regular basis. If it isn't that bad then a good flea bath first & then Frontline or Advantix for flea control. Each product has an ingredient which store bought brands do not contain which actually make these products work WAY better. It's good someone is looking out for the animal. Good Luck.

The best thing to do is to bring the dog to get a flea bath. They give them at most pet hair cutting places. That will kill the fleas and any eggs that might be in the hair. Second get a flea collar and drops to put on the dog to prevent them from coming back. They are put in the middle in the middle of the top shoulder blades because the dog can't lick it off there.Vacuum any rooms the dog has been in (including furniture) and be sure to wash sheets or dog bed he has come in contact with. Good luck

Flea collars are totally worthless (except maybe in your vaccuum cleaner). Medication from the vet is the way to start, you will learn about how much is appropriate according to the animal's weight. Then the dog must be treated monthy. Many of the medications now cover fleas AND ticks so they would be the best to use.

If you feel this animal is seriously debilitated by fleas (and they can be) or if there is any other indication of abuse, such as not having food and fresh water available it is something you need to report to animal control.

No flea collars do not work and are a waste of money. They like all OTC flea products can be dangerous to your dog. Go to a vet and get Advantage or Frontline/Frontline Plus. Also use a flea comb on her to comb out as many fleas as possible along with the eggs and larve. You will also need to treat the enviornment to keep the dog from being reinfested with fleas.

Whatever you do don't do a flea collar. They have flea shampoo's at your local pet store or your local vet. Also, they sell a product called Frontline or Advantix at your vet. These are oils that go between her shoulder blades and kill fleas and ticks within 24-36 hours after applying. But don't bathe her 48 hours before or 48 hours after applying the flea treatment.

Get Frontline or Advantage. If he is outside all the time, he will get fleas all the time. Can't he go inside when he is treated to avoid getting more? They can get very sick from flea bites.

It is your neighbors dog, right? Then let the neighbors worry about it and you just steer clear of the dog.
