She tries to jump out of my arms within 30 seconds of being held. Otherwise she is a very attention-seeking cat who loves to be petted, purrs constantly, and sleeps on our bed all night.

She is 4 years old. I just adopted her from the SPCA 6 days ago so I don't know her history. She is a Siamese-Persian mix. Cutest most affectionate kitty I've ever met.

Does the cat willingly lay in your lap to take a nap? When you hold your cat are you petting her and talking to her? Some cats just don't like being held, period- try feeding the cat first in such a way that the cat thinks that by being fed it will be picked up- a la' Palovs Dog and positive re-enforcement

It's just personal preference. Your cat sounds exactly like my Teddy (Teddy Roo). He loves to be petted and he's paw at your face (so cute) and purr really loudly. He actually goes crazy for attention, but you can't pick him up and hold him and he won't sit in your lap. Beside you, yes, but not on you. His brother, Sammy, on the other hand is in a lap 24/7 almost. It's just preference. Just like some people are more active and don't like to be tied down.

Cats are just finicky like that. My little girl loves to be picked up and held (even if you flip her over so that her belly's exposed), but if you sit down she jumps right out, and she won't ever sit on your lap. But my little boy loves to be a "lap cat" and hates to be picked up unless you hold him a particular way.
My advice, just don't pick her up unless you have to.

Is it something that just started or has she always been that way? If it is something that just started she could have a kidney or bladder infection and you picking her up makes it more painful. If she has always been that way, it could have been something that happened to her as a kitten. I have one that was an adult when I got her and she will sit beside you or get into your lap but if you pick her up to do it she will leave. Good luck.

Some just don't. My boy runs away whenever someone tries to pick him up and he leaves soon after if you do pick him up. He is cuddly on his own time line though.

Some cats don't like the movement under them. When you're sitting down or laying down, there is none of that movement.

If you wanted to pick her up often, you should have picked her up ALOT when she was a kitten

Because you didn't pick her up enough when she was a kitten.
