Because it manifests itself in the body aswell. The brain becomes accustomed to the level of chemicals produced and therefore, reversal can be a long process.

People with mental illnesses can't just snap out it because they cant controll there mind anymore. It would be like going brain dead for a extended time period. The longer the person is like that the more fatal the illness becomes. It depends on what has happened to the person to make them that way.
When (and if) the person snaps out of the mental illness controlls how the person would recover. It could be days or months before the person fully recovers. Sometimes the person never fully recovers and then you just have to be happy with what time you got to spend with them before the person became that way. You would have to go on with your life nomatter who the person was in relation to you. It is a very difficult (and touchy) situation to handle.
Good Question

Most mental illnesses are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. They're not just people's imagination. Getting cured or learning to live and deal with the illness is a long process and it simply isn't possible to "just snap out of it". If it was that easy, nobody would be ill.

Can people just "snap out" of having cancer? Can they "snap out" of having heart disease? Mental illness is a real disease also. It doesn't just come and go because we want it to. Do you think someone with bi-polar enjoys the way they feel? Or how about the schizophrenic? Do you think that is a fun way to live? Kinda like heart disease, only worse. Once you have it, it never goes away, but hopefully the right medications make it more tolerable.

The illness is in the mind. People who are mentally ill don't live in the same realm of reality as someone who is not.
There have been shown differences of the chemical activity in the brain of someone who is mentally ill. Then causes of many mental illnesses are pretty much unknown. Good Question

Not only can they not snap out of it, mental illness sometimes causes severe physical symptoms so that the person is in physical as well as mental pain. How about a little understanding and sympathy ?

Mental illness often has physical roots-there's something physically wrong with the brain. Many of them are lifelong conditions. Therapy can help in many cases but the person with the mental illness can't just "snap out of it."

Some mental illnesses are all in the mind.... others are not. In my experience, depression and such for the most part are all in the mind. I remember from my psychology class that there are other illnesses that the person really can't do anything about.
Why can't they just snap out of it? Well, most of the time they don't want to. They may like the attention they get while they're "ill" or some such (I've known people like this).

Well you'd be forgiven for thinking so but you'd be mostly wrong. Most mental illness is actually in the brain. To be more specific they're caused by neuronal or neurochemical imbalances in the brain.
Your mind is the self-created illusion that's created inside your head by your brain doing what it does. It's possible for external influences to have an effect on your mind but your mind has no independent existence that can be separated from the brain that creates it.

No it's not. Unfortunately some people think it is but it's one of those things that you have to go through before you can understand. Mental illness is the same as any other illness.......it's very real!
