Okay, for the record, 13 isn't 'old' for a car - I was driving an '81 Volvo until last winter when I gave it to a friend because I'm leaving the country soon.

Yeah, check the catalytic converter, the air filter, the whole exhaust line, all of that - you might have a bit of an air plug somewhere, before or after combustion. If that doesn't produce any results, start checking everything else - coolant, gas lines, etc. Don't screw with gas lines unless you know what you're doing, though - too easy for an idiot to blow things up :)

first do not unhook the exhaust at the manifold and start the car you can burn a valve doing that then you are talking alot of money for repair same with the oxygen sensor do not take it out and run the car these cars are set up not to run right without them a nissan master tech would know that it could be your oxygen sensor you should replace it or the converter can be plugged up start the car and let it run if it is plugged after the car runs a while the converter will get real hot and glow red from being so hot it could be the smog control pump under the hood this is the only thing you can unhook and check it just take the belt off of it and start the car the black smoke is not engine damage the fuel is not burning right so chec the plugs they may be fouled most likely you will find it to be the oxygen sensor
if you need more feel free to contact me by e-mail and i will help you through it ..good luck

It probably needs some tuning. You know, and engine adjustment and what not. The black thing could be that its passing oil, so maybe an engine re-build might be in place. Its definetely something with your engine. You have to check the whole block out. The revving thing might be linked to the cooling system. I once had a car that wouldn't rev over 3.000 rpm's and later I found out that the coolant wasn't traveling throught the lines and doing all the things it has to do. So try checking your cooling too. But I think that an engine re-build, or a major tuning and adjustment might help your engine out. Don't forget to check the cooling system.

I agree with forddieselman1 that it is possibly a plugged up catalytic converter. You lose power and the vehicle starts missing, along with extra fuel being used. It also won't pass the emissions test. The idea of taking the converter off to check makes sense. Like it was suggested, just verify that the engine improves with it removed, and then shut it off before you catch something on fire.

Start by removing the oxygen sensor and start that engine and drive but not far because fire shooting out of the oxygen sensor hole melting things under the brake booster. Clogged exhaust is what you described. removing the oxygen sensor lets the exhaust out ahead of the converter and muffler. Low air flow in the exhaust causes low air flow past the air flow meter and into the engine fuel injectors squirting normally but not enough air causes high HC readings and low CO2 readings And high CO reading.

MORE THAN LIKELY YOUR CONVERTER ARE PLUGGED. DISCONNECT YOU EXHAUST FROM THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND SEE IF YOUR RPMS GO UP. DO NOT REV FOR TO LONG BECAUSE THERE WILL BE HEAT AND SOME FIRE COMING OUT OF THE MANIFOLD JUST TRY NOT TO BURN THE CAR DOWN. BE CAREFUL.

To be honest it could be anything on a car that old. I suggest you check everything that you can (plugs, ingition system, timing, fuel supply). If that fails then quite frankly you need to strip it down and recondition it.

It's 13 years old. You probably have a clogged converter.

Replace your conveter maybe. Timing is off or maybe EGR!
