No. Pure vanilla extract is the only way to go for anything calling for vanilla extract. Imitation vanilla extract is made from wood sap and sweeteners. Just buy pure vanilla extract. Pure vanilla extract won't discolor what you're cooking. Maybe it's because you're putting too much vanilla in the product. If you add what the recipe calls for, your food shouldn't be discolored from the vanilla. Happy cooking!

Pure is better. I am a Pampered Chef consultant, and we have Double Strength Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract, and it's really good stuff. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if it's double strength, then you only use half the amount in your recipe. Hope this helps!

Sorry honey, but you should get real vanilla, it is so much better. I tried the artificial in a batch of cookies, but they were not nearly as good as if I had used the real thing.
