It's because cats go by smell, not by sight. Cats actually can't see very well, so their smell is more sensitive. My cats do the same... they're not interested in looking at themselves in the mirror, but they can sure pick up another cat's smell!

When my cat was a kitten, he desparately wanted to play with the other kitten in the mirror, and kept trying to go behind it (it was a free-standing mirror) to find him. It was so cute! Now he takes no interest in the kitty in the mirror. Either he knows that it is just his reflection, or he thinks it's fake because he doesn't smell another cat. Not sure which. I don't think cats really care to know what they look like.

A Kitten may try to play with the reflection in the mirror. An older cat who is wiser knows that its just a reflection.

I think its just your cat
my cat has a ball infront of the mirror
Maybe your cat has already figured out what a reflection is and is no longer interested in it.
its not all cats its particular cats.. like i said my cat can sit in front of a mirror and play for a good period of time

Do they avoid mirrors? Interesting. I personally avoid mirrors too. There are few in my home. I have 4 cats and have never seen how they act around mirrors. I guess cats aren't vain.

I have seen kittens posturing and attacking a the kitten in the mirror. Cats are too smart not to know that it is not a real cat.
Animals are not "self-conscious". They accept themselves just as they are. Maybe humans have something to learn from them.

Because the cat sees themself, but doesn't smell a thing. Cats associate everything with smell so if they don't smell anything, it's like the cat is not in the reflection.
