Make sure he's taking the iron with a drink that isn't counteracting the iron. No milks or antacids. Taking the medicine with orange juice really aids in absorbing it (because of the vitamin C).

The iron medication doesn't work instantly. You should give it time. A change in diet will cause diarrhea so give him whole wheat toast, rice, bananas, cheese and crackers and avoid too much sugar which makes diarrhea worse. You should give him orange juice to help absorb the iron. Make sure he drinks lots of water so he doesn't become dehydrated. Usually iron causes constipation so that is wierd. Who knows, he may even have a virus? Good luck.

To the best of my knowledge (speaking as someone who has been in medical field for 8 years), most people tend to become constipated as a result of adding iron to their diet. However, I have also learned over the years that there's alway an exception to the rule. Not everyone reacts the same to everything. Everyone's body works differently and something that will make one person constipated could give the next person diarrhea. If it were me, I would consult my pediatrician simply because chronic diarrhea could be a sign of other problems.

Not too sure if the iron drops are doing this but maybe it is the drinks being served.

Rice, bananas, apple cider not juice may help firm him up. If he likes red meats that may also help as these contain a good source of iron as well. I'd suggest green leafy veggies but what 3 year old would eat them. Unless of course you try broccolli covered in cheez wiz.

Although that's not a usual side effect, it could be the cause of his diarrhea. You need to call the office of the doctor who ordered the drops and tell them about the problem.

Cannot answer this question with out the name of the medicine. The best bet for you is to go to www.webmd.com and type in the name of the medicine and it will tell you all you need to know about it. GOOD LUCK.

if it's giving him diarrhea, call your doctor, usually iron makes you constipated.
