We go to the lake a lot and want a dog that enjoys the boat an water. Any help?

I've got 2 beagles and neither like the water or being on a boat. I've got other friends with beagle that say the same. Plus, dogs that have long ears are susceptible to ear infections when water gets in the ears. Labs on the other hand can't get enough of water. Beagles are GREAT with children though......

You need to take in consideration the size of the dog you want also. There is a big size difference in Beagles and Labs. Go to the Purina website and fill out the questionnaire there and it will suggest dogs for your. Then from those do some research and see if any of them love water (you will find a dog now and again that hate water and this will include some Labs). Talk to a breeder of the dog you like and see if they have any knowledge of their particular dogs like or disliking water. It is a good idea to find out as much as possible about any dog breed before you get one. Good luck.

I work at a vet's office and I can tell you from experience that most Beagles that I have seen, love water...They are used to hunt and retrieve a lot and that means that they run through woods and puddles of rainwater. I'd watch your dog the first time when he comes in contact with the lake. The perfect water dog is a Labrador. Even their coat is created that they dry faster than normal dogs. But Beagles are a lot of fun and make great companions. Best of luck to you...

It always depends on the dog... All 4 of my dogs are dogs that are bred for water (spaniels, retriever and a catahoula)
My catahoula and my retriever love water... my spanials hate it.
If you introduce your dog to water slowly, you have a good chance that the dog will enjoy swimming and such.
If you get a beagle though.. keep there ears in mind.. as soon as the dog is done swimming dry there ears out well, you don't want to have problems with ear infections.

Beagles like water, but labs are great dogs for the lake and they love water.

Not all beagles. Labs usually like the water but, I have known some who do not.

My springer spaniel absolutely loves the water. Our two collie mixes seem to really enjoy it too. My malamute mix despises the water and so doesn't my dachshund!!

yeah, beagles like water, but there are other dogs more suited for swimming. Retrievers and Spaniels LOVE water, they were bred for it...
