I am in love with this guy who has just left to go to basic training in the navy. He left 08/16/06. He will be gone for 6mos' "im thinking". Is basic training for 6mo's? What items can they bring with them on the journey? Can they have cell phones? I know he told me his cell phone will be turned off, but it's still connected--he just have it turned off during the day. Many responders as possible--Thanks!

No cell phones, however he would be allowed to call home or whomever he wishes to call 2-3 times while in basic. He will be able to write as many letters to as many people as he wishes as time allows. Usually they give you ample amount of time for letter writting.

Basic is a little less than 3 months long. However it is general practice for the Navy to not allow leave after basic training. Normally the sailor would have to wait until either graduation from whatever school he will be attending after bootcamp or a major holliday, such as Christmas.

While in school we did have some people with cell phones, it did not seem to be a problem with the chain of command.

It make take a couple weeks from the time he left for you to get a letter from him if indeed he would infact want to write to you. Did you tell him how you felt before he left?

Basic is less than 3 months in most cases although it's not unusual to get "washed back" a time or two. After that, formal training schools (Tech School, AIT, etc.) can take anywere from 2 - 12 months more.

Cell phones aren't allowed in basic. Most likely they will be confiscated and returned upon graduation. After that, it will be up to the school commandant if cell phones are allowed in technical school. Typically it would be an earned privilege.
