A few years ago I was at a wine tasting and one of the hosts recommended I try a certain wine because I LOVE champagne. The wine had a slight fizz to it and was from Italy (and it was white). I cannot remember the wine OR grape name and was hoping there were some connoisseurs on here that could tell me what it was. Any takers???

Wow, I am impressed with all the help here! It wasn't a pinot grigio (one of my favs I might add), I am going to try a couple of your suggestions because by your descriptions, I think one of you has nailed it! Thank you all so much! It's rare that I get so many answers with substance!!!

Could be Prosecco or Asti Spumante -- both are made by a different method than real Champagne which means it has less intense bubbles, also they tend to be less tart -- especially Asti which is often quite sweet.

If the wine was nice and fruity on the nose with a fairly dry mid palate (similar to some champagne or sparkling whites) it's possible that it was a vermentino, it is mainly grown in Sardinia and it can also have a 'spritzy' (fizzy) mouth feel (as can many young whites, particulary when under screw cap). It is possible that it was a pinot grigio, this tends to be fruitier on the palate and gives the impression of sweetness.

Asti Spumante is the champagne/sparkling wine. Try Pinot Grigio too.

The first two that pop to mind based on your description are either Asti Spumante or Prosecco.

I agree that it was probably spumante... try Ballatore Gran Spumante...

Could also have been something like Prosecco but that's a little pricier... try Mionetto DOC Prosecco Brut... nice price for the taste...
