After death nail and hair growth cease after death. The body dehydrates and the skin around hair and nails will recede a little making it appear as if the nails,hair have grown. They remain the same length as when they died but more of it is exposed due to tissue shrinkage.

It doesn't its an old myth hair and nails stop growing after death. Just think about it. If your dead what in your body could keep your nails and hairing growing? Everything is dead!

No, the exterior shrinks and withdraws as water is removed from the body making it seem that the nails improve. Hair, like nails are lifeless and could not proceed to make stronger. It purely looks that they do from the body's dehydration.

I thought that I read that this doesn't happen even though it appears to. What is actually happening is that the skin is shrinking/tightening up, but since I have never been around a dead body long enough to check this out firsthand.... lol~

The hair doesn't grow, the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the skin shrinks, making the hair only appear to grow.
