My Darlin', you sound like a very sweet person who just wants to help. But...this is a scam...it has to be. I've had experience with hospitals and their administrations and know they would not be sending out random emails to people regarding a patients condition (breaking patient confidentiality), nor requesting a stranger to sign a blank check on the patient's account. (Ask them if they can spell FRAUD, or maybe, EMBEZZLEMENT?
I'll bet that if you complied, the next step would be in asking you for YOUR personal information, i.e. your checking account info (routing #, etc.). Little by little you will be asked for just one more piece of personal information until your account is empty, your credit cards are maxed out, and/or new credit cards have been opened up in your name.
As much as I care about people and am empathic to those in pain, I will not make myself vulnerable to a scam.
If I were you, I would ignore the requests, or tell them to contact the US Embassy for assistance with their patient. Then I would seriously consider changing my email address.
Good luck to you, hon. The world needs caring people and a little looking out for the other guy. So, let me do a little looking out for you.
Terri

This a scam. the hospital cannot and would not ask you for any money or to sign a check - not just yet. They will send a bill. They have her address ( as they have her passport), so they can locate her family - but I REALLY doubt that the whole thing is real.

Call the hospital that she is supposedly admitted to, call patient information. They can tell you if this person is a patient or not. Honestly it sounds like a scam to me, but if you want to be sure you should contact the hospital. You should tell them about the e-mail you received from that hospital and they can tell you if it's bogus or not. If you hear from her daily, how does she contact you? Through e-mail? If she has information on how to contact you, and they are claiming that there is no other way to contact you other than e-mail, that is definitely a scam.

Is the hospital in your area? If so, I would contact the police and tell them of this e-mail. Ask if they would like a plain-clothes officer to accompany you to the hospital to see what is going on. I mean, how are you supposed to sign one of her checks if it is not in your area? Not that you would, but if you go there with the police, perhaps you could find out what is going on. I think there might be a problem and I would worry also. Either SHE is trying to scam you, or she might be in trouble. How scary for you.

A. Is the hospital in the USA? If so, look up the contact info and call them directly to find out what is going on. If they ask for relations when you call in say you're her brother.
B. No hospital is going to ask you to sign a blank check...this is totally bogus.

Not much you can do really. Try the local police station and maybe file a missing persons report. Then can give you better advise. Don't send money, don't sign any checks.
They can trace the address this email came to you from.
