Damn a mattress isnt going to provide enough support or cushioning to really help you survive the 40th floor, but if that is your only option its better to jump and see if you survive.
crazy question :)
what would you do?

It depends, if you have terrible coordination, I'd wrap myself with the mattress, otherwise, I'd jump on to it.
But you couldn't survive a 400 foot fall even with a matress, so I'd take the stairs, even of fire was blocking the way.

It would be kind of hard to wrap yourself in a mattress- don't you think? It would be kind of hard to throw it down and aim for it- don't you think?
Let us know how that turns out for you :)

Rediculous question.
Just move to a higher floor or the roof. There's only been three highrise building collapses in history as a result of fire, and they all occured on the same day. Move to a higher location and wait for the fire department. There's no reason to jump.

neither one. By the time you hit the ground you are traveling at 160mph. No little mattress is going to save you from that (rate of a falling body, 32Ft/sec^2. do the math)

Jumping is out of the question...head for the stairs, down to the ground or up to the roof and wait it out

I would not do that . . . You are likely to injure yourself or kill yourself no matter how you do it. . . I would recommend another escape plan. . .
Look for a way to get down further
-stairs
-rope/cable
-another building nearby
-tree
- fireman with big catch thing
