You need to start running now! If you are not used to running much, try the run-walk method, where you run for 1-4 minutes, and then walk for a minute, for a distance of 3 miles at a time, 4-5 times a week. Then just build up from there. Be careful in the heat, hydrate, and try to get enough sleep and good nutrition. Make sure you have good running shoes; many injuries like shin splints are related to worn-out or poorly fitting shoes. Check out www.runnersworld.com for more advice. Cross-country is a wonderful sport because it is both an individual and team effort, and you can REALLY see a difference from week to week with regular effort. Good luck!

My husband is a runner and cyclist. I have to make him carbs for dinner while he goes on practice runs/rides. Just break down the miles you are running and don't forget to allow your body to rest before the race. Get plenty of hydration and carbs for the event! He eats bananas, apples, protein bars, drinks gatorade, etc.

Don't forget to pace yourself. Don't start out too fast. Find your pace and keep with it. And remember, only one person will win the race. Just keep striving for your own personal best. As long as you keep beating your own best time, you are doing great!
